The economics of Costco rotisserie chicken

Costco’s popular chickens have stayed fixed at $4.99 for more than a decade — even in the face of raging inflation. But it’s come at a cost.

Chicken holds a special place in the carnivore’s heart.

This year, the average American will scarf down 99 lbs. of chicken, handily outranking our consumption of beef (56 lbs.), pork (52 lbs.), and fish (19 lbs.). That’s roughly 20 whole chickens per person, per year, in case you’re wondering.

About 900m of the 9B chickens we consume on an annual basis are rotisserie chickens — precooked, seasoned, ready-to-eat birds.

And of those 900m, 106m are sold by one retailer: Costco.

The chain debuted its popular rotisserie chickens around 2000, pricing them at $4.99. More than two decades later, they’re still $4.99.

Despite record-high inflation, supply chain woes, and the rising production costs of poultry, the retailer has refused to raise the price of these prepped birds.

Adjusted for inflation, Costco should be selling its chickens for $8.31. But over the past 20+ years, the retailer has only raised its prices one time — a brief, $1 increase during the 2008 financial crisis. In 2009, it knocked its rotisserie chickens back down to $4.99, where they’ve stayed ever since.

Many Costco chicken loyalists have been blissfully perplexed by this pricing strategy. How the cluck are these chickens profitable?

The short answer is: They’re probably not.

In a 2015 earnings call, Costco’s CFO, Richard Galanti, admitted that the retailer was taking a multimillion-dollar hit by not raising chicken prices.

As is the case at most grocery chains, Costco’s rotisserie chickens are a loss leader.

“Very few people simply buy the chicken and leave,” John Longo, a professor at Rutgers Business School, told The Hustle. “They probably shop for other items that provide higher profit margins.”

Costco maximizes the chances of this happening by placing the rotisserie chickens at the back of the store, next to its wines (14% margin) and side dishes. But Longo says these chickens serve other important purposes for Costco that go beyond immediate profit:

1. Value signaling: They reinforce the idea that the Costco brand is a good deal, potentially leading to more membership sign-ups ($60-$120/yr).
2. Good press: The company’s refusal to raise the $4.99 price during inflation makes it look benevolent in the public eye.

This value-forward approach isn’t limited to chickens. Costco vigorously guards its food court prices, too.

Costco’s ex-CEO, Jim Sinegal, was so impassioned about the $1.50 hot dog combo that he once famously told a colleague: “If you raise [the price of the] effing hot dog, I will kill you.”

Over the past decade, tactics like this have nearly doubled Costco’s rotisserie chicken sales, to 106m units ($530m).

If you added up the pounds of chicken the company sells, it would amount to ~6x the weight of the Statue of Liberty. Lined up end to end, the chickens would almost run the entire Earth’s circumference.

In recent years, that immense volume began to pose some production challenges for Costco.

1. Industry consolidation: Five huge producers (Tyson, Pilgrim’s Pride, Sanderson Farms, Perdue, and Koch Foods) came to control 60%+ of America’s $65B poultry market, making it harder to bargain on prices.
2. Fewer whole chickens: Sales of whole chickens declined from 50% to 15% of the total market as producers shifted to pre-cut chicken pieces.
3. Price surges: Chicken feed, which accounts for 60% of the cost of producing a chicken, shot up in price after its main ingredient, corn, saw a spike of its own.

To reduce dependence on the big suppliers, Costco decided to vertically integrate its chicken operation.

In 2019, the company opened a $450m chicken facility in Nebraska that produces 2m chickens per week — enough to fulfill 43% of its rotisserie supply, and 33% of its raw chicken supply.

Costco partners with local farmers in Nebraska (dots on this map) to raise the chickens. After 42 days, they’re moved to the main production plant for processing. With the plant, Costco controls the whole supply chain — hatching, feeding, shipping, and cooking.

The operation is expected to have a $1.2B economic impact on Nebraska’s economy — and it will reportedly save Costco up to $0.35 per rotisserie chicken.

But it comes with controversy.

1. Some experts argue that contracted farmers, who have to pay for their own labor expenses, will only earn ~$60k/yr from the partnership — far less than the $90k-$130k Costco promised.
2. A 2022 lawsuit alleges that Costco “illegally neglects and abandons its chickens,” and accuses the chain of raising chickens so big that they can’t walk.

Costco didn’t respond to The Hustle’s requests for comment. For its part, the company has committed to running the new plant for at least 15 years and has pledged to continuously improve conditions.

In the meantime, Costco rotisserie enthusiasts don’t seem to mind much.

The chicken has its own dedicated Facebook page with 19k followers. On a recent post about the lawsuit, most of them seemed to be nonplussed. 

“Who cares,” wrote one fan. “It’s 5 bucks.”

Cross-promotion with your fellow podcasters is a great way to reach new audiences that you might not have otherwise been able to reach! Whether you cross-interview, or just shout each other out in an episode, the positive impact cannot be overstated. (Sidebar to this one: Are you a Podbean hosted podcast? 

1. Keep track of trending topics on social media, so if something happens to align with your podcast (looking at you, video game podcasters on National Video Game Day!), you can take advantage of the trending hashtags!
2. Your stats do a lot more than just tell you how many downloads you have – use the audience heat map to see when your listeners are most engaged with your podcast, and time your episode to drop around the same time!
3. Use built-in social share tools and post scheduling software to help you automate some of the work behind social media posting. It keeps your platforms active, gives you space to promote past episodes, and frees up your time to focus on recording your podcast!
4. Explore your local scene! Your local cons may have spaces specifically for local podcasters to speak, run booths, and more! It’s a great way to connect with your community!
5. Speaking of connecting with your community, reach out to local places (coffee shops, comic book stores, businesses associated with your podcast topic) to see if they’re open to hanging flyers or signs for your podcast!
6. What categories do you have your podcast listed under? Don’t be afraid to change them up to see how that changes your listenership in your directories!
7. Do you use audiograms? They’re a great way to promote your favorite clips, as well as introduce some multi-media features to your social media feed!
8. Make sure that your podcast is listed on all the available directories to submit to – you never know what portion of your audience you’re missing out on by not being on a specific directory!
9. Create a custom hashtag for you and your listeners to use across social media! Custom hashtags help you keep track of what your listeners are saying about your podcast
10. QR codes are your friend! Include them on your business cards, promotional flyers, and more as a quick way to link to your content.
11. Speaking of quick ways to link to your content, use something like Linktree to keep all of your links in one place – this cuts down on how much searching and clicking your listeners have to do, which means they’re less likely to get redirected or distracted from your content.
12. Ready to jump into advertising? Try paying for ads on other podcasts! You’re already reaching an audience that enjoys podcasts, so all you have to do is find the best podcasts to advertise on.
13. Look into growing your email list! This goes directly to your listeners’ email inbox, and gives you more space for content than you’d find in the average social media posts.
14. How does your community communicate with each other? Look into making a group space like a subreddit, a FB group, or a Discord server for everyone to get together and chat. Creating a fun space for your community and shouting them out will make other people want to join.
15. Don’t be afraid to change up your podcast description! SEO is always changing and adapting to new trends, so changing your description up will help keep you on trend.
16. Speaking of SEO, brush up on what some of the trending topics and phrases are for your niche. Including them in your podcast description, episode description, and other content will help you pop up more in online searches.
17. Have you tried live-streaming before? Going live with your podcast will create a new experience for you and your listeners to engage in, and gives you new ways to reach out to listeners!
18. Get creative with making merch! Run a book podcast? Look into bookmarks! Run a D&D podcast? Look into making custom dice! Listeners who love your content will love supporting you
19. Speaking of creative merch, look into working with/commissioning local artists or small businesses online! They’ll promote your design (and by extension, your podcast) to their audience, who may not have otherwise known about you.

One of my business associates was a featured guest on a local podcast / radio show in California where he was sharing his expertise with Restaurant Owners in California and othe small business owneres.

20. Continuing on the merch train, get exclusive with your merch! Maybe you have a t-shirt design only available to newsletter subscribers, or a sticker that only your livestream attendees hear about. Exclusivity will create more desire to be part of your community!

21. Look into joining a podcast network. They’ll offer you new opportunities for cross-promotion, advertising, and more!

22. Create content that fosters engagement – ask questions, run polls, get your audience input on episode topics, and engage with the answers.

23. Want to explore video for your podcast but don’t know where to start? Start with doing videos exclusive to Instagram reels or TikTok! Short form videos are easier to start with, and allows you to grow from there!

24. Speaking of reels and TikTok, remember that it’s always good to repurpose your content, but make sure that you’re adapting as needed for each platform.

25. Look to online events and panels to see if they’re looking for speakers or podcasters to promote with, or participate in their event. There a lot of virtual events happening year-round, and they’re always looking for people to participate!

26. If you can’t find an event, try hosting your own event/panel! It provides a different lens through which listeners can view you and your podcast, and establishes you and your podcast as a voice in your niche.

27. Do you have a website for your podcast? If you don’t – or if you haven’t touched it since you started your podcast a few years ago – take the time to set it up with your relevant links and podcast info!

28. Consistency is key! Once you’ve got a schedule for your podcast (your publication days, your recording days, etc), try to stick with it as much as possible.

29. On your social media, utilize every tool you can to make the platform work for you! Use your pinned posts, video options, and highlight options to make sure that any information your listeners want is just a click or two away.

30. Use calls-to-action in your posts and your episodes to remind your listeners of the ways they can support you (leave comments/reviews, check out your shop/patron page, etc).

31. While we can’t condone acts of vandalism, tagging some sidewalks in chalk with your podcast name/social media handle is a promotion go-to for artists all around the world. Get creative, grab a friend, and get tagging!. I love these type of Guerilla Marketing ideas.

32. Look for in-person get-togethers for topics in your niche! You’ll find both potential listeners and potential episode guests, as well as some fine folks that can help inspire future episode topics!

38, Does your local paper/news website have an Arts section? Reach out to them to see if they’d be interested in featuring you and your podcast in the paper/on their site!

39. Your local libraries love featuring the folks from their neighborhood and what they’re getting up to. See if they have a spot to promote your podcast on their bulletin board, or have a spot for some of your business cards!

40. If you are stretched for time you can always find many people on Fiverr that are willing to do various podcast promotional activities for you.

The website has been created at the end of May 2019 and 3 months later this product has been launched.

The founder of 100K is Chris Munch. He has started his online business back in 2006. Since then he has sold over 200,000 digital and physical products and helped more than 10,000 entrepreneurs start and/or grow their own businesses.

I could not find a Facebook Group for the 100K Shout Out. Only the JV part and that is for people who promote this product.

They do have though, email-based support and coaching 24/7/365. Prospects should get a rapid response from the in-house team who are fully trained in the 100K system.

This seems like a revolutionary system, but I have my doubts about the automation process.
I think if you have a budget you can try this out.

By the 2nd month, you should see some results already. If not, just ask for a refund.

In my opinion, people who buy this system know that they can’t fail. I mean for that price they pay, they do everything they can to make this work.

What I miss in this whole system is hosting.
This company does not provide you with hosting. Therefore you have to check Hostgator or Namecheap or other services.

If you looking for ways how to learn about SEO and how to build your website and you want to become an expert, I am afraid this is not the right system for you.

The reason I mention this is once you learn how to create a website and rank well, you are on your way to succeeding in any niche, besides you can open an agency and provide paid service to local businesses.

But if everything is done for you, what is the benefit? Apart from the potential income that might be generated.

Of course, it can run for a year, maybe two but what will happen if for some reason your 100K Shout out will be closed. You are just a visitor or client of 100K Shout Out.

Just like you use Facebook. Your FB account can be just terminated for no reason.

I don’t want to criticize this system, but I just would like you to see the bigger picture.

If you are a newbie, remember that the 1st dollar made online is always the hardest one.

The next concept I need you to internalize as it relates to lead generation is every lead generation method you implement will give you a positive return on your investment over time.

The reason I can say this with certainty is because of what I call the “Duplication Factor” of network marketing and I have proved this to myself many times over the past 30 years. 

Simply, what I am trying to communicate is if you persist with any particular lead generation technique, it doesn’t matter if it  is with dropcards,  safelist, postcards, road signs, FaceBook, or any of the dozens of methods we teach ……….. eventually that method will bring you 1 person that will pay for every nickel you ever invest in that method.

Quite frankly I have sponsored many people who have created tens of thousands of dollars in income for me and a few that have created over $100,000 in income.  When I think about it, I have one couple alone that came from a postcard, that have paid for every nickel I spend on advertising for the rest of my career earning me nearly ½ million dollars in income.

So understand and create a long term vision for what you are doing.  I am not saying to spend money you don’t have, but I am saying to not be afraid to advertise your business when you are using proven ad copy and methods.

You know the old saying  “Early to bed and early to rise, work like heck and advertise”. 

We have always taught that you should invest your retail profits from the sale of your products and services back into your business as well as establishing an advertising budget.  Your advertising budget should be a percentage of your commissions and bonuses.   When I first started years ago I had a good paying corporate job, so I didn’t need to pull cash from my business and 100% of my business income went back into my business.

Some people thought I was crazy, but today I am in a position where I would never have to invest another penny in any kind of promotion or advertising if I chose not to.

So, I think it is smart move for network marketers, or any business to establish and advertising budget.

What is a Safelist?

Basically a safelist is a gathering of like minded individuals who have agreed to exchanges emails.  You agree to receive ads from all the others members in exchange for the opportunity to send your own email promotion to them. This concept has many advantages, here’s a couple of them.

The advantages of safelist marketing

For one, it’s spam free, members have to double opt-in to the safelist and thereby agreeing to receive your ads, should some “Forgetful Freddie” decide that the safelist mail is spam it’s not really your problem as the mail is not sent from your email address or server. Actually this is the origin of the name, a safelist is a closed community where it is safe for members to exchange email promotions.

The second advantage is quite obvious but many people fail to see this, what do all safelist members have in common? They have something to promote, but they have not advanced far enough in their internet marketing career to dismiss a very mundane task as posting to safelist is. That means that if you have a product, report, ebook, income opportunity etc. that can help people on the way to internet glory, the average safelist user is an excellent prospect for you.

Why I will always use safelists

I could probably make do without safelists but I sure wont. Safelist are a starting point for many newbie marketers and picking those people up as subscribers and customers can be very profitable e.g. they do not own every product out there and they do not know everything, meaning that you have if they do decide to join your team they will probably be teachable.  You can see this as opposed to getting *Dale Calvert* on your list, when your initial giggling wears off you will probably realize that I really am on the inside of the industry and know about the majority of MLM programs a couple of months before they launch.

A lot of my promotions are done by staff members or I outsource them.

However I normally do my own safelist promotions.

I keep my user name and passwords in a word document together.  They are part of my ongoing promotions.

What you need to understand before you start marketing with Safelist

I have tested over 100 different safelist over the years.  I have eliminated 20 of them and now only use 10 which I will share with you later.   After watching my stats and the number of clicks I was generating over time I was able to eliminate 20.

When you join a safelist they allow you to send 500-1000 emails on average every day, three days, or seven days.  Different safe list have different terms.  Most allow you to upgrade and by upgrading you are able to send a greater number of emails, usually 3000 – 5000 more frequently usually every 3 days.  

By clicking on the links in the emails of other members you can earn more credits that will allow you to send more emails.  I have students that are able to email thousands of people every week free of charge because they take the time to click  on the links in other members emails.

As I mentioned early I have tested over 100 different safelist.  I initially join as a free member and after I identified the list that are sending me converting traffic I upgrade  my account.  Personally I would rather pay a fee to be able  to send out more emails more frequently than to take the time to click on members emails.  Thankfully I am the minority, if everyone did that of course you could never expect results with safelist.

Before you  start using safelist you need to set up what are commonly called a junk email account.  You need to register your junk email account with the safelist  so you don’t clog up your email box with messages from tons of members, especially after you join multiple safelist.

We recommend using setting up your junk account with Google.  If you know how to set up folders in a google account you could use your primary account.  That is what I do and I simply have emails from safelist skip my inbox and go directly into my safelist folder.

There are two important ideas I want to share with you here regarding safelist marketing.  I always promote a lead capture page.  This way when people opt in they are now on one of my house list.  I never send visitors directly to a website or affiliate promotion.  I always send them to a lead capture page.  By doing this I add thousands of new opt in members to my in house list every year.

The key to success with safelist is to get members to click and open your email.

They key is a good subject line, but please be truthful and don’t make outrageous claims of earning millions is 1 minute and 17 seconds! 

I will share with you my best 3 subject lines.  I don’t know what you paid for this report but what I am getting to share with you is worth 1000 times whatever you invested.

(Note on #3) most safelist allow you to insert other members names by using brackets as shown above.  Different safelist have different parameters which will be spelled out for you in their instructions.

The next thing I can share with you is keep your message short.  Most of my emails are two paragraphs or less.  

Ok  I have shared with you the everything you need to know to get started with safelist.  So the next obvious question is what are the best safelist to use?

This is a very unique mailer and has a few different perks that allow you overtime to build up to frequent large mailings.   The response rate is very good and guaranteed.  New free members receive 500 emails delivered at the time you join and you can send 500 weekly and click ads and earn mailing credits.

Sunrider Safe List makes it easy to create mail credits by clicking ads. It is a little cumbersome, but after you use it a couple of times you will have it down.

This has been one of my favorite list for a long time.  Not only can you do safe list promotions, but this website also features a traffic exchange surf platform as well.     This platform is one you should join for sure.

1,222 members at the time of this writing.  This is a newer list with active subscribers.

#7  Build My Downlines

This site has a lot of newbie opportunity seekers that are attempting to work multiple money game type programs.  A lot of people “Tripping Over Financial Independence to get to a few Dollars”.  The whole platform is the definition of “Appealing to Mediocrity”.   However many people are there simply because they have bought the wrong philosophy. 

Like all safelist programs, members are at least willing to take action, and for that reason I like this program for the safelist.   Paying people to join you or sign up will never work when building a real network marketing team, so I would 100% disregard this part of the platform. 

#8 The List Auction

Free members can send 500 emails 1 time a week

#9 List Jumper

One of the most popular safe list mailers online and one of my favorites. A large, active user base.

Super responsive mailing list site with a unique One-A-Day bonus system that rewards users for reading at least one email ad per day. This delivers tons of unique traffic! I have recently become an upgraded member.

#10  Downline Maxx

Operated by same team that operates Build My Downlines.  It is the same platform, but is a different membership.

#11 Guaranteed Mails

This is a newer safe list program run by an experienced platform operator. Credits are based upon the number of emails opens, which insures your promotions are seen.

Free Members can mail every 5 days, you need to click 5 ads on the day you send your email. They have 4 -5 upgrade levels as you can see in the chart below. $54 for a lifetime upgrade to Superior is something I am going to do today, it looks like the best deal from the chart below currently published on their website.

I normally don’t like to invest in mailers until they are older and established. At the time of this writing this platform has less than a 1,000 members, however it is well run, and could grow to thousands over time, and when it does the value and price of memberships will increase. So sometimes it makes sense to get locked in early.

A newer safelist that appears to be growing quickly.

#13 List Outbreak

This is a new mailer and becoming more and more popular. As an upgraded member you can mail 1000 random members. I became an upgraded member, at the present time it is $5.99 a month and will definately increase if this list mailer grows.

The way I look at this, If one person joins from this list the the minimum up front comissions is $30.

FINAL THOUGHTS

It takes a few minutes to get set up with safelist, but the time is definitely worth it.   The key to success with safelist is to be consistent.  If you have the opportunity to email 1,000 people every week, then email 1,000 people every week.

Because of my upgraded accounts, I email over 100,000 safelist members every month.  As previously described many of these people end up on my in house list. 

Consider this, if you do nothing but become free members of the 10 list we have covered and they let you mail on average 500 members a week … that is 5000 emails a week, 20,000 emails a month!
